    Celebrate Gullah/Geechee Culture


    The Gullah/Geechee Nation International Music & Movement Festival will be held from August 3 through 5 in Charleston, kicking off on Friday with individual tours, followed by a VIP welcoming reception.

    Saturday’s events start at the Charleston Music Hall and include Gullah/Geechee craft, music, drama and storytelling presentations by native Gullah/Geechee artists, including the sweetgrass artistry of Anastatia Ketchen and Gregory Grant, the Wona Womalan African Drumming and Dance Troupe, the cast of "Gullah/Geechee Knows Emmanuel," De Gullah Cunneckshun, Bajan poet and dramatic artist Winston Farrell and more.

    There will be a meet-and-greet luncheon by chef Benjamin Dennis with featured artist Quadré Stuckey and Queen Quet, chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation (QueenQuet.com).

    Saturday ends with a Sea Island Sunset VIP Party with a Purpose private charter cruise on Charleston Harbor. The Festival concludes on Sunday at 2 p.m. with a closing drumming ceremony and community reception at the Children's Museum of the Lowcountry

    Health & Wellness Expo at Destiny Community Café


    The nonprofit Destiny Community Café, inside Scotts Grand, will host a Health & Wellness Expo from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., September 29. Raine Mertz, co–coordinator of the event and success stimulator at Raine’s Realm, a coaching, energy healing, and image consulting company, says, “We are looking for vendors who offer clients and patients natural health options that help maintain a healthy lifestyle.” Proceeds from the event support the Pay-What-You-Can! Program at the café.

    Ragina Scott Saunders, owner of Scotts Grand and the Destiny Community Café, explains, “It is the intent of Destiny Community Cafe to build a healthy community by providing a basic need of food in a respectful and dignified manner to anyone who walks through the door.”

    Massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, naturopathic healing providers, reiki masters and similar practitioners may sign up as a vendor for $25 or to as a five-minute speaker and vendor for $75.

    Race for Alzheimer’s Research


    The 2018 Thrivent Financial Race For The ARK will be held on August 25 to benefit The ARK Alzheimer’s Support Services. The race starts and ends at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, located at 206 Central Avenue, in Summerville. Race packets can be picked up either the day prior to the race from noon to 6 p.m., or on Race Day from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at the Fellowship Hall. There will be an awards ceremony after the race.

    The ARK provides technical direction in organization, development, policies and procedures; training for staff and volunteers in dementia care techniques; educational materials and educational opportunities for caregivers and volunteers; identifying grant funding sources; review and critique of completed grant applications; advice and counsel as a program grows; assistance to identify community partners and interest groups; and assessment of immediate and long-term needs.
